What's New at JSI |
September 2008
The Internet has changed how and where we communicate. Emails now often replace snail-mail and face-to-face meetings. We search for information online instead of going to the library. Virtual shopping carts steer us away from malls.
Today, “Web 2.0” has also become a new meeting place where we can reach out to and engage with the communities with whom we work. We can share educational information, experiences, and lessons learned on blogs, social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook, wikis, YouTube, and in virtual worlds like Second Life. Our communication extends beyond the web into mobile technology: we can use our mobile phones to locate medical services and communicate with friends and service providers. New media technologies are transparent, interactive, customizable, inclusive, and user-driven.
The potential results of using new media in public health practice are tremendous. The following articles from the AIDS.gov and DELIVER projects, the Vermont Health Care Provider Education Initiative and Region I Family Planning Training Center demonstrate ways in which JSI is entering into this new space.
Hope you’ll explore with us!
